Court Sentences Man to Death for Kidnap, Murder in Kogi
Justice Abdul Nicodemus Awulu said prosecutors proved Halilu and his gang abducted hotel owner Uche Andrew Offo and collected a N2.5 million ransom.
- On Tuesday, a Kogi State High Court sentenced Jibrin Halilu to death for kidnapping and murdering his neighbor, Uche Andrew Offo, following a successful Department of State Services prosecution.
- This ruling occurred barely 24 hours after a Katsina State High Court sentenced a female arms courier to death, both cases stemming from Department of State Services investigations.
- On March 23, 2023, Halilu and his gang invaded the Everready Hotel in the Angwa-Tiv area of Obajana, abducting proprietor Offo; despite the family paying N2.5 million ransom, the kidnappers murdered him.
- These sentencings follow a June 3, 2026, landmark verdict by a Federal High Court in Abuja that sentenced four men to death for the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
- The court sentenced the quartet of Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, and Abdulhaleem Idris to death by hanging for the attack, which killed over 40 worshippers and injured over 100 persons.
