After missing his putt on the 18th hole, Sam Burns comes up one shot short at the US Open
Burns missed a half-inch birdie putt on 18 and finished one shot behind Clark after a 67 in the final round.
Wyndham Clark won the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday, defeating runner-up Sam Burns by a single shot. Clark held off a late charge from Burns, who finished behind after shooting a final-round 67.
Following a disappointing finish at last year's U.S. Open at Oakmont outside Pittsburgh, Burns sought retribution at Shinnecock. He entered Sunday trailing Clark by multiple shots before mounting a comeback bid.
The runner-up nearly forced a playoff after shooting three-under 277, but his birdie putt on the 18th green failed to drop. Burns, who birdied four of the first eight holes, dropped to his knees in disappointment.
The defeat occurred on Sunday during Father's Day, adding emotional weight as Burns' father, Tom, offered support on the driving range. His wife, Caroline, is 37 weeks pregnant, giving him perspective on the narrow loss.
Reflecting on the result, Burns said, "The guy who played the best won," distinguishing this performance from his previous failure. He expressed pride in his effort, stating "I gave it my best, and I did everything I could to have a chance to win.
