NYC Gunman Who Shot 4 Dead Was Son of Ex-LAPD Officer, Police Say
NEW YORK CITY, JUL 31 – Shane Tamura targeted National Football League offices but attacked the 33rd floor by mistake, killing several including Julia Hyman, authorities said.
- On July 28, 2025, Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old former Horseshoe Casino employee, opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office building, killing four people including an off-duty police officer.
- Tamura intended to attack the National Football League's headquarters in the same building but mistakenly took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where the shooting occurred.
- Investigators found notes where Tamura attributed his actions to chronic traumatic encephalopathy , a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, although diagnosis is uncertain in living people.
- Tamura had legally purchased part of the rifle from his supervisor Rick Ackley for $1,400, and forensic searches of his Las Vegas apartment uncovered psychiatric medication, a suicide note, and about 100 rounds of ammunition.
- The shooting ended with Tamura killing himself after Julia Hyman, a 27-year-old Rudin associate who had briefly left a panic room, was fatally shot upon returning outside.
