The new campus will double enrollment to 122 girls as SOLA expands online classes to reach more Afghan students in exile.
- The School of Leadership of Afghanistan opened a permanent campus in Rwanda for Afghan girls in exile, with classes beginning later this month to establish a long-term home for the institution.
- Following the Taliban takeover five years ago, founder Shabana Basij-Rasikh relocated the school from Kabul after the regime barred girls from secondary education in 2021.
- To reach students remaining in Afghanistan, Basij-Rasikh and Mati Amin developed SOLAx, an online platform offering curriculum via WhatsApp that now serves 41,000 students across 76 countries.
- Despite doubling enrollment, the new campus will reject more than 99% of applicants; a United Nations report estimates 2.4 million Afghan girls remain excluded from secondary education.
- Basij-Rasikh views the Rwanda facility as temporary, stating, "We have a mission to get ourselves back into Afghanistan," believing these educated students will eventually lead their nation.
