Jakarta - Sumatran elephants, a critically endangered species, are facing further threats from fires that have destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of their habitat on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. More than 4,500 fires were recorded in 21 areas where Sumatran elephants live from June to early September. More than 560,000 hectares of land have burned in Indonesia over the same period, according to the NGO Geopix, quoted by AFP.
