The Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is a favourite of the regional election in Saxony-Anhalt, one of the 16 Länder of Germany. Its inhabitants are called to the polls on Sunday 6 September. For the first time since the Second World War, the far right could lead a German region. (International).
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party could beat the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) by a full 18 percentage points in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. According to the latest pre-election poll by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen agency, it would win with 41 percent of the vote. The CDU, which is in second place in the poll, is expected to win with 23 percent of the vote.
