Private companies added just 44,000 workers in July, below expectations, ADP reports
Services-sector hiring drove the gain, while pay for job switchers rose 7%, the largest increase since August 2025, ADP said.
- On Wednesday, the ADP National Employment Report showed private sector employment increased by 44,000 jobs in July, with the services sector driving all net gains for the month.
- Growth fell below the downwardly revised 95,000 jobs added in June and missed the Dow Jones consensus forecast of 75,000, as hiring patterns shifted amid changing macroeconomic conditions.
- Service-Providing firms added 47,000 positions, led by education and health services producing 36,000 jobs, while goods-producing companies reported a decline of 3,000.
- Pay for job-changers rose 7%, the largest increase since August 2025, while job-stayers saw 4.4% gains. ADP chief economist Nela Richardson said "rapid pay growth implies supply constraints in parts of the labor market."
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its official nonfarm payrolls report in two days, providing a broader measure of the labor market ahead of potential Federal Reserve policy decisions.
