‘Act Immediately’: Bushfire Threatening Homes in Ellenbrook
The fire threatened over 100 homes, damaging six to eight properties including fences and a gazebo, before being mostly contained within an hour by crews and waterbombers.
- On Thursday, a fast-moving bushfire broke out in Ellenbrook, about 30 kilometres north‑east of Perth, threatening dozens of homes near Tonkin Highway in a modern estate of over 100 houses.
- Starting in nearby bushland, the fire began in a small pocket of bushland and has been moving rapidly in a northeasterly direction, while fire authorities say the cause is under investigation.
- Aerial footage captured huge plumes of thick black smoke and at least one backyard cabana engulfed in flames, while firefighters reported the blaze burned three hectares and damaged six to eight properties as waterbombers and ground crews fought the fire.
- DFES warned people to leave now and not wait, with more than 100 homes in the emergency zone; roads were gridlocked and the Tonkin Highway was temporarily shut.
- Authorities caution that "Over 400,000 hectares of land has been burnt in Victoria to date, and it is really important that communities continue to heed the advice of emergency services," Bain said, as residents claimed over $A200 million from 3123 claims since January 7.
