ACLU Preparing to Spend $25M in Midterm Elections

- On Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union announced a $25 million investment to educate voters on midterm races and ballot measures, launching its "Firewall for Freedom" strategy across nine states.
- Deirdre Schifeling, the ACLU's chief political and advocacy officer, explained the organization is pivoting from federal campaigns to state-level battles. "The next generation of battles over abortion, voting rights and democracy will not be decided primarily in Washington," she said.
- The group will spend $13 million on state Supreme Court, secretary of state, and legislative races in Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. An additional $12.5 million supports ballot measure campaigns in Kansas, Missouri, Montana, and Virginia.
- Targeting a "roughly 14%" chunk of the electorate known as the "ACLU Sway," the organization aims to mobilize voters beyond its traditional base. Schifeling noted this group includes libertarian-leaning men and older white women.
- This campaign seeks to build lasting "constitutional infrastructure" to block efforts to restrict reproductive and voting rights, with the ACLU intending to protect state courts from politicized judicial selections throughout 2026.
