Ace Zack Wheeler set to return to struggling Phillies rotation on Saturday at Atlanta
Wheeler finished a five-game rehab assignment and is expected to work about six innings and 90 pitches, manager Rob Thomson said.
- Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler will return to the rotation on Saturday in Atlanta against the Atlanta Braves, manager Rob Thomson confirmed Tuesday. The 35-year-old right-hander makes his season debut after nine months away.
- Wheeler has been sidelined since August 15, 2025, after being diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome. The three-time All-Star underwent surgery for a blood clot near his right shoulder.
- After throwing 77 pitches for Double-A Reading on Sunday, Wheeler completed a five-game minor league rehab stint. Thomson expects him to handle about 90 pitches and six innings in his return.
- With a six-game slide, the Phillies are currently 8-14 and have adjusted their rotation to accommodate the ace. Andrew Painter will start Friday, followed by Wheeler on Saturday and Aaron Nola on Sunday.
- Manager Rob Thomson believes having Wheeler on the 26-man roster improves the team regardless of his current form. His return stabilizes a rotation including Painter, Nola, and Jesus Luzardo as Philadelphia trails Atlanta by 7.5 games.
