Pam Bondi won't testify before House about Epstein files, DOJ says
Justice Department officials said Bondi was subpoenaed as attorney general, and the committee may pursue contempt if she does not testify.
- The Justice Department stated Wednesday that former Attorney General Pam Bondi will not appear before the House Oversight Committee next week regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files. The agency argues the subpoena applied only to her official capacity as Attorney General, a role she no longer holds.
- President Donald Trump ousted Bondi last week, appointing Todd Blanche as acting Attorney General. Although Bondi initially planned a month-long transition, Blanche assumed leadership of the department Tuesday, signaling her official departure from the post.
- The Committee subpoenaed Bondi last month to address her handling of the Epstein Files. Under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the department released roughly 3 million of more than 6 million pages, though critics allege improper redactions and withheld documents.
- Reps. Ro Khanna and Nancy Mace urged Chairman James Comer to enforce the subpoena, while Ranking Member Robert Garcia warned, "if she defies the subpoena, we will begin contempt charges in the Congress. The survivors deserve justice."
- The committee noted they "will contact Pam Bondi's personal counsel to discuss next steps" regarding the deposition. Her dismissal follows reports that her handling of the case fractured the MAGA coalition and reduced support for the president.
