ABVP Urges Centre to Cancel Umar Khalid Documentary in NLSIU

- On Monday, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Bengaluru, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, sent letters to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi, and Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal demanding permanent cancellation of a documentary screening about activist Umar Khalid at the National Law School of India University .
- The Law and Society Committee had scheduled filmmaker Lalit Vachani's documentary for September 14 as part of Political Prisoners Day, but the National Law School of India University postponed it on Sunday citing 'logistical and security concerns' after ABVP and other activists threatened consequences.
- ABVP Mahanagara Secretary Abhinandan Mirji dismissed the postponement as 'simply a stalling tactic to let public outrage subside,' arguing that educational institutions 'cannot serve as platforms for political propaganda' linked to Khalid, who has been jailed for six years without trial.
- Beyond cancellation, the ABVP demands Central intervention to order a comprehensive inquiry into the NLSIU administration and ensure the documentary is never 'filmed, screened, or promoted on campus under any pretext,' according to their letter.
- NLSIU reaffirmed its commitment to holding the event this trimester with adequate security, while students told The Hindu that similar screenings occurred in 2025 during Political Prisoners Day with discussions on pre-trial detention and civil liberties.
