Nigeria: Airport Cab Fares Surge 50% As FAAN Bans Uber, Bolt, Others
Passengers at Nigeria’s busiest airports face higher fares and fewer rides as FAAN enforces new registration and vehicle rules.
- On Thursday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria clarified it has not banned Uber and Bolt, but suspended their commercial operations at all FAAN-managed airports pending finalization of license agreements.
- The authority introduced mandatory registration through its Airport Car Hire Rank Management System to improve security, passenger identification, and revenue collection from commercial operators.
- Enforcement intensified from August 1 with task force deployments; unauthorized pickups incur N40,000 fines, while passengers report fare increases of more than 50 per cent due to vehicle scarcity.
- Passenger Tochukwu reported that airport-operated cabs cost N25,000 instead of the N13,000 Bolt fare displayed, as drivers cite risks of vehicle impoundment and security costs for higher prices.
- FAAN continues engaging with e-hailing platforms to develop a mutually acceptable operational framework, with management expressing confidence that an agreement will be reached shortly.
