Rep.-Elect Adelita Grijalva, Dems Protest Swearing-in Delay
Democrats accuse Speaker Mike Johnson of blocking Adelita Grijalva’s swearing-in, delaying a key vote on the release of Epstein files amid a government shutdown.

- Pointing to procedural steps, Johnson cited certification by Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and the House recess until Oct. 20 amid the government shutdown.
- Grijalva won a Sept. 23 special election but remains unsworn, and seating her would shift the House to 219 Republicans and 214 Democrats while forcing a vote on the Justice Department Jeffrey Epstein files.
- Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes threatened to sue Johnson if he did not seat Grijalva, while Johnson said protesters tore down a sign at his office foyer and told reporters `We will swear her in when everybody gets back`.
- Democrats point to an earlier instance when Johnson swore in two Florida Republicans while the House was not in session, suggesting the delay aims to block release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, critics and the Arizona delegation said.
