Cleveland Native Abdullah Mason Defeats Albert Bell, Retains WBO Title Inside Wolstein Center
Mason overcame a slow start and dropped Bell twice in the final round before referee Mark Nelson stopped the fight.
On Saturday night at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, WBO lightweight champion Abdullah Mason defended his title with a 12th-round TKO victory over Albert Bell, his first defense since winning the belt in Riyadh last November.
Bell entered the matchup as a late replacement for Joe Cordina, who was denied a U.S. visa after being charged with assault on June 25, forcing Mason to fight in his hometown of Bedford, Ohio.
Fighting in front of his hometown fans, Mason struggled initially as Bell used his length to control the pace, but he turned the tide after the sixth round by targeting Bell's torso with brutal body shots.
Referee Mark Nelson stopped the fight in the 12th round after Mason dropped Bell twice, though critics blasted the decision as premature; Bell admitted being buzzed but questioned the stoppage.
Earlier that night, brothers Ibrahim and Abdurrahim earned victories in the prelims, completing the Mason family's 3-0 sweep in their hometown. Mason, age 22, is now positioned as a potential pay-per-view star for Top Rank.
