CDC Report Finds 71.5% of U.S. Adults Felt Fatigue in Past 3 Months
Frequent fatigue was linked to depression, anxiety and cognitive difficulties, and women and younger adults reported it most often, the CDC found.
- About 71.5% of adults in the United States experienced fatigue on multiple days over the past three months, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.
- Clinical psychologist Jennifer Caspari noted that increasing stress contributes to an uptick in fatigue, often causing hormonal surges that wear the body down. Fatigue is frequently connected to other health problems and difficulty concentrating.
- Frequent fatigue was highest among American Indian and Alaska Native adults at 25.5%, while women reported higher rates than men at 20% versus 13%. Younger adults ages 18 to 34 years experienced higher rates than adults 65 and older.
- People with fatigue are at higher risk of activity limitations and disability, including permanent work disability. Individuals experiencing frequent fatigue were more than three times as likely to have symptoms of depression and anxiety compared to others.
