London’s Latest Fourth Plinth Sculpture Is a Woman Going Places
- On Thursday, September 10, 2026, New York-based artist Tschabalala Self unveiled her 16th Fourth Plinth commission, "Lady in Blue," in London's Trafalgar Square, replacing Teresa Margolles' previous installation.
- Chaired by curator Ekow Eshun, the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group selected Self in March 2024, continuing a public art program launched in 1998 to showcase contemporary work.
- Portraying a Black woman striding with ambition, the sculpture is "not a remote historic figurehead but a tribute to everyday women," Deputy Mayor Justine Simons said at the public launch.
- The sculpture will occupy the plinth for two years, during which Self is hosting a concurrent special project exploring the "quotidian figure" at the Pilar Corrias Gallery in London.
- After the Trafalgar Square display, the artwork will move permanently to Fornebu, Norway, as the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group prepares to install the next selected commission by Andra Ursuta in 2028.
