A teenager from Iceland, who goes to LSU, will be the first from that country to play in the US Open
The 19-year-old LSU golfer advanced through a playoff in Ohio and will play at Shinnecock Hills after becoming Iceland’s first U.S. Open qualifier.
Arni Sveinsson became the first player from Iceland to qualify for the U.S. Open after surviving a four-for-three playoff in Westerville, Ohio, earlier this month.
LSU coach Jake Amos recruited Sveinsson after the teenager created highlight packages, drawing him from his home near Reykjavík to Louisiana for collegiate play.
During practice rounds this week at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Sveinsson played alongside Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns, describing the experience as "a little surreal."
Sveinsson is on the tee sheet for Thursday at Shinnecock Hills. "I try to prep really well, so as long as I'm prepped and ready to go and know what I'm getting myself into," he said.
Golf in Iceland is played during a short four-month season, with Sveinsson estimating the country has 50 to 60 courses, yet he ranks 14th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
