The 1918–19 flu pandemic wreaked havoc in Delhi, killing 7,044 people in the city alone and 23,175 in the entire Delhi province. The initial infection was reported after a sick European arrived in Delhi from Simla. Following the pandemic, influenza was officially declared a contagious disease in September 1920.
