U.S.-Bound Delta Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Portugal Due to Smoke in Cabin
First responders treated 8 passengers on the tarmac and took 4 to hospital after smoke was reported in the cabin, officials said.
On Sunday, a Delta Air Lines flight carrying 296 passengers diverted to Porto, Portugal, after cabin smoke forced an emergency landing en route from Barcelona to Boston.
A mechanical issue reported two and a half hours into the flight prompted the diversion to Carneiro Airport, though officials stated the cause remains under investigation.
Emergency responders at Porto treated 14 passengers for smoke inhalation, with eight receiving care on the tarmac and three taken to a hospital; a spokesperson described those hospitalized as only "lightly" affected.
Delta recently experienced four emergency landings in one week, including two involving cabin fumes, while Flightradar24 data shows Monday's scheduled flights for the aircraft were canceled.
Data from 2025 shows lithium-ion batteries triggered an average of 2.36 incidents weekly, with 12% leading to diversions, as the International Air Transport Association previously launched campaigns to improve onboard awareness.
