It was not until 1906 that the secret method used by the great Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes to demonstrate some of his most famous theorems was finally discovered in an old parchment. Three pages of this parchment had unfortunately disappeared afterwards...
Spectacular discovery: An art historian has rediscovered a lost page of the famous Archimedes palimpsest – a copy of texts by the famous ancient scholar Archimedes, about 1,100 years old. The now found page shows – greatly faded – a text from Archimedes' work "On Ball and Cylinders". It has long been considered lost, but was now found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Blois, France. Archimedes was one of the most important scholars of ancient times.
Still complete in 1906, the palimpsest of Archimedes lost three leaves during the 20th century. One of them has just been found at the Museum of Fine Arts in Blois. This discovery revives interest in this exceptional manuscript which has never been studied exhaustively.
