A new study suggests that the Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, pictographic writing system, rongorongo, may have originated before the arrival of Europeans. If the origins of the signs created by the island's natives are definitively confirmed, it could be one of the rarest achievements in human history and the last known independently invented writing system in the world.
