A new ball game: Avs players turn to tennis in offseason, 'hot topic' rages over who rules on court
Players say tennis builds cardio and eye-hand coordination, with some using offseason matches for rehab and locker room bragging rights.
Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas and teammates use tennis during the offseason to maintain competitive edge and sharpen eye-hand coordination.
Nicolas Roy, who picked up tennis around 5 years old, believes every player should pursue different sports during summer rather than focus solely on hockey.
Competition spills from the ice to the court, with Artturi Lehkonen and Necas engaging in spirited tennis matches. "He hasn't won," Necas proudly announced, though Lehkonen countered, "Actually, the last time I did beat you."
Defenseman Brent Burns provides his court to teammates because "they say it's a nice court, easier on the body," Burns explained. Nazem Kadri and Cale Makar also incorporate tennis into their routines.
Despite the growing tennis trend, there is no official team ranking of players. "It's a bit of a hot topic right now," center Brock Nelson said, as teammates continue debating who holds the top spot.
