Mom's Creative Tattoo Helps Her Communicate with 11-Year-Old Son with Autism

- In Fredericton, NB, Jess Fletcher recently tattooed a QWERTY keyboard onto her arm to help her 11-year-old son, Hunter Fletcher, communicate. Hunter, who is non-speaking, uses the ink to spell words when his AAC device is unavailable.
- The idea emerged months ago at a restaurant when Hunter's AAC device died, preventing him from ordering. After Fletcher wrote the alphabet on paper, Hunter flipped it and drew a keyboard, showing he needed a more reliable way to express himself.
- "Having something that's quiet that he can talk to me almost in secret gives him more autonomy as an individual," Fletcher said. In public, Hunter can now discreetly request needs like bathroom access without his device announcing it aloud.
- A video showcasing the tattoo has garnered more than 100 million views on the Hunter's Voice Facebook page. Teachers, nurses, and first responders have reached out to Fletcher inquiring about creating similar tools for other neurodivergent individuals.
- Fletcher is currently exploring new projects to expand this communication method, including temporary tattoos, shirts, and sports sleeves printed with keyboards. These initiatives aim to provide other neurodivergent individuals with the same accessible, discreet communication tools that have helped her son.
