Kaohsiung councilor detained in corruption, extortion case
Kaohsiung, Aug. 1 (CNA) Kaohsiung City Councilor Chen Ming-tse (陳明澤) of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and a construction contractor were detained and held incommunicado Saturday over allegations of extortion and bribery involving a green-energy company.
Democratic Progressive Party Kaohsiung City Councilor Chen Ming-tse and a construction company owner surnamed Chuang threatened green energy companies, demanded soil extortion benefits and bribes. After questioning them yesterday, the Taiwan Qiaotou District Prosecutors Office applied for their detention and prohibition of contact on charges of corruption and intimidation. The Taiwan Qiaotou District Court granted the request today.
On March 30, the residence and office of Chen Ming-tse, a DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) Kaohsiung City Councilor who has been elected for six consecutive terms, were suddenly searched by the Qiaotou District Prosecutors Office. Chen himself was taken in for questioning by the prosecutors.
