Nearly 1,400 Workers Laid Off at Former Navistar Truck Factory in Ohio
Roshel says it expects to rehire workers in six to 12 months as it phases in armored-vehicle production at the plant.
On Wednesday, nearly 1,400 workers were laid off from the Navistar truck factory in Springfield, Ohio, erasing a year of job growth in the Dayton area just three days before President Donald Trump's scheduled rally.
Since 1990, the Dayton area has shed 50% of its 90,000 factory jobs following the North American Free Trade Agreement, which shifted manufacturing to Mexico and fueled voter support for Trump's anti-trade messaging.
UAW Local 402 member Kyle Bos, who previously voted for Trump, now plans to canvass for Democrats, calling a $5,000 campaign promise "offensive," while forklift operator Marianne Donnelly cited insufficient overtime as a financial strain.
Roshel, a Canadian manufacturer of armored vehicles, is purchasing the plant and plans a phased process to protect and eventually double the current workforce, with laid-off workers expecting rehiring within 12 months.
The expansion of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, now employing 38,000 people, has diversified the local economy and attracted aerospace companies including Electra, Joby Aviation, and the Sierra Nevada Corporation.
