Czech Court Sentences Colombian to 8 Years for Arson Attack Which Officials Think Is Tied to Russia
- On June 9, 2025, a 26-year-old Colombian man was given an eight-year prison sentence by a Czech court for planning an arson attack on a public transport depot in Prague.
- Approximately a year prior, the man was taken into custody following his act of igniting three public buses and was also found to be planning another attack, having received instructions through Telegram along with a promised payment of $3,000.
- Officials suspect that Russia partly orchestrated the attack amid a series of sabotage incidents across Europe following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
- Prague's transport authority reported damages of at least 200,000 koruna, and Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated the attack aimed to "undermine the trust of citizens in our state."
- The sentencing highlights ongoing concerns that such attacks form part of Russia's hybrid war against Czechia to sow division and weaken support for Ukraine.
