Vaccine and Drug Combination Cuts Melanoma Recurrence by Half
The combination therapy kept 68.8% of patients cancer-free at five years, compared with 49.1% on Keytruda alone, researchers said.
- On Monday, researchers presented data at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference showing a personalized mRNA vaccine halved the risk of melanoma returning after five years.
- Moderna and Merck developed the personalized vaccine, intismeran autogene, which sequences a patient's tumor DNA to encode up to 34 neoantigens that train T-cells to recognize and attack cancer cells.
- In the 157-patient trial, 68.8% of those receiving combination therapy remained cancer-free after five years, compared with 49.1% for patients treated with Keytruda alone.
- Stage 3 melanoma patient Connie Franciosi, who participated in the trial, reported no recurrence, illustrating the potential for high-risk patients to avoid common relapse rates.
- A larger Phase 3 trial involving 1,000 patients is currently underway, and researchers aim to seek FDA approval in the coming months pending analysis of results.
