‘Lost’ Floating Island Found After Drifting 30km Across Canadian Lake
BC Hydro says the 9,800-square-metre island drifted about 30 km and is not stable enough for people to step on.
- On Monday, officials located a mysterious floating island near the shore of British Columbia's Williston Reservoir after it vanished from satellite imagery weeks earlier.
- B.C. Hydro spokesperson Bob Gammer attributes the island's formation to record-high water levels driven by heavy winter snow and summer rainstorms, which likely caused the landmass to break off from the shoreline.
- Hydro estimates the island covers 9,800 square metres, spanning about 230 feet wide and 460 feet long, roughly equivalent to 1.5 American football fields.
- Although the island has drifted around 30 km from its initial location, utility officials confirmed it poses no immediate threat; "It's great to know that we found it," said Gammer.
- Gammer advised against stepping on the unstable structure, cautioning, "It is remote, and most people will never come near it," while noting similar floating bogs exist, such as Wisconsin's Forty Acre Bog.
