Man pleads not guilty in the hanging death of a Mississippi woman
Police said the investigation remains active and additional arrests are expected after a judge denied bond for the 51-year-old defendant.
On Monday, Jarques Ratliff pleaded not guilty in Municipal Court to the murder of Tasia Fortune, who was found hanging in Jackson on Aug. 3.
Ratliff was arrested Friday after the state medical examiner deemed the death a homicide; Fortune, a Kentucky native, had recently struggled with homelessness.
Police Chief RaShall Brackney said Friday that Ratliff had an "association" with Fortune, but authorities have not provided a motive or indicated if race played a role.
During the brief Monday hearing, the judge denied bond for Ratliff, and authorities indicated that additional arrests are expected in the investigation.
