Range-wide and temporal genomic analyses reveal the consequences of near-extinction in Swedish moose
Ungulate species have experienced severe declines over the past centuries through overharvesting and habitat loss. Even if many game species have recovered thanks to strict hunting regulation, the genome-wide impacts of overharvesting are still unclear. Here, we examine the temporal and geographical differences in genome-wide diversity in moose (Alces alces) over its whole range in Sweden by sequencing 87 modern and historical genomes. We found …

Moose and ferret are red listed while the otter has become viable. Now SLU (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) presents its new, preliminary list of red listed species in Sweden.
The moose population has declined so rapidly in Sweden that the species is now likely to end up on the national red list. “But we still have plenty of moose. It is worse for all the species that do not receive as much attention,” says Henrik Thurfjell at the SLU Species Data Bank.
Rare Moose on the Loose in Czech Republic
Moose are common in some areas of Europe like Norway and Sweden, but they are definitely not common in the Czech Republic. That’s because humans once hunted moose nearly to extinction in Central Europe. The animals are making a slow comeback in the country, but it’s still pretty rare to see them. That’s why when some fishermen in Zlín spotted a moose wandering around, they took a video, and it made headlines. [RELATED: Fishermen Spot Massive Sha…
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has published a new preliminary version of the red list, where it is now proposed that moose and ferrets be classified as endangered species. At the same time, the otter is considered to have recovered sufficiently to be removed – after a long period of growth. The red list is a compilation of species that are considered to have such small or decreasing populations that they risk disappearing…
The European moose's migration through the Czech Republic continues. The animal, which probably wandered into the country from Poland, has already passed through the Moravian-Silesian Region. On Monday, people filmed the moose near a pond in Lukov in the Zlín region, and on Tuesday it was spotted almost in the center of Zlín.
