72-Hour Manhunt Launched After 11 Killed in KwaMakhutha Shooting
Police are pursuing a promising lead as investigators say the motive remains unclear and some victims were linked to alleged illegal activities.
- On Tuesday night, gunmen killed 11 people at a home in KwaMakhutha, a township 30 kilometers south of Durban, while three others were injured in the attack.
- Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, ordered a 72-hour manhunt to mobilize all available resources and pursue the suspects.
- Preliminary investigations revealed some victims were on Crime Intelligence's radar, as 13 men and one pregnant woman were gathered inside the home before the shooting occurred.
- "A feud between rival groupings cannot be ruled out," police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said, while Kwa-Zulu Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli stated the incident "left the community in profound shock and grief."
- Around 60 people are killed each day in South Africa, a country of around 62 million, and this shooting follows a series of recent femicides near Johannesburg.
