A $450M art collection is poised to break Van Gogh and Cézanne’s auction records
The 12-work collection includes a Van Gogh and a Cézanne that Sotheby’s says could set auction records.
- On Wednesday, Sotheby's unveiled five Impressionist masterpieces from the Blaquier-Arrieta collection in London, ahead of a November New York auction where the 12-piece collection is expected to fetch around $450 million.
- Assembled by the late Argentine heiress Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier and her husband Carlos Pedro Blaquier, the collection remained private at their family estate, La Biznaga, until their children released it for sale.
- Works by Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro are included; the rare Van Gogh is estimated at $180 million and the Cezanne at $120 million.
- Before the New York auction, the collection will tour Taipei, Hong Kong, and Paris; Helena Newman, Sotheby's chairman of Impressionist and Modern art, says there is "a return to really established, tried and tested works."
- The family is retaining important Latin American holdings while releasing the Impressionist core, a move Sotheby's characterizes as part of a generational shift in art ownership as major collections pass to new owners.
