Germany to send more Patriot missiles to Ukraine, warns of stepped-up Russian winter attacks

Germany will also expand air-to-air missiles, drones and long-range ammunition as officials warn Russia may intensify strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.

  • On Tuesday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced Germany will transfer Patriot PAC-2 interceptor missiles to Ukraine from Bundeswehr stocks. "I decided to deliver urgently needed PAC-2 interceptor missiles from Bundeswehr stocks to Ukraine," Pistorius said.
  • Ukraine faces a sharp shortfall in PAC-3 MSE rounds used against ballistic threats, and Kyiv is contracting roughly 1,000 missiles for US-designed Patriot systems to counter Russia.
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an exemption allowing Ukraine to purchase critical Patriot components using the Ukraine Support Loan, with a $3.7 billion tranche following the $9.7 billion already disbursed.
  • Britain also committed $135 million to boost Ukraine's air defense package for the winter, providing Patriot missiles, large-caliber artillery, and drones to help fend off attacks from Russia.
  • Speaking at the 36th Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting, Yevhenii Khmara noted most missiles will arrive in coming years and called for more urgent aid to counter immediate threats.
