80% chance of El Niño developing in June-August, says UN

The WMO said most models point to a moderate to strong event that could lift global temperatures and intensify drought, rain and heatwaves.

  • The World Meteorological Organization warned on Tuesday that an El Niño event is likely to return this year, with an 80 percent chance of emergence between June and August and a 90 percent chance conditions will extend through November.
  • Deep-Sea heat reservoirs in the Pacific Ocean are currently exceeding 10.8 degrees Fahrenheit above average, a phenomenon that typically precedes surface warming and disrupts global weather patterns worldwide.
  • Historical El Niño cycles have proven catastrophic: the 1997-1998 event contributed to 23,000 deaths and drained $5.7 trillion from the global economy, while an 1877 event sparked a famine claiming over 50 million lives.
  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that El Niño conditions will "pour fuel on the fire of a warming world," urging immediate climate action to protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather impacts.
  • According to NOAA physical scientist Michelle L'Heureux, wind pattern sensitivity remains the "biggest wildcard" in predicting seasonal intensity, even as El Niño typically increases drought risk in Australia and South America.
