8-year-old dies in apparent drowning at World Cup watch party in California
Investigators say evidence points to an accidental drowning, and a GoFundMe fundraiser has raised over $83,000 for the family.
On Friday, June 12, 8-year-old Taylor Thach died after an apparent drowning during a World Cup watch party at a residence in El Segundo, California, according to the El Segundo Police Department.
Emergency crews responded to the 700-Block of California Street at 7:30 p.m., providing lifesaving measures before transporting Thach to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Investigations Lieutenant Eric Atkinson stated, "Every sign points to accidental drowning."
Thach, a student at Center Street Elementary School, was remembered for his "kind heart and friendly spirit," according to community tributes. He had been a beloved member of the school community since kindergarten.
A community GoFundMe page has raised over $83,000 in four days, surpassing the $5,000 goal to support Thach's family. Funds will assist his mother Sokunthea, father Somnang, and brother Jordan Thach with immediate expenses.
Investigators are handling the case as an accident with no indication of criminal negligence, while police continue gathering statements from party attendees. The school district is providing counseling services to students and staff.
