- On Sunday, Animal Control Officer Scott Crawford of the Monmouth County SPCA rescued an 8-foot Burmese python from beneath a backyard shed in Freehold. The 40-pound reptile was safely extracted after a contractor removed floorboards.
- Officials believe the juvenile snake was released by an unknown owner who could no longer manage its size. Dr. Samantha Mammen of the Monmouth County SPCA said, "It was likely someone's pet."
- After performing X-rays, veterinary staff discovered the python had recently eaten a large possum. A local contractor removed shed floorboards, enabling Crawford to safely secure the animal for transport.
- The SPCA partnered with Fins & Feathers in Red Bank to arrange permanent care with a licensed handler. The organization urged owners: "If you can no longer care for a reptile, please reach out to a local rescue."
- Burmese pythons are non-native to New Jersey and can grow up to 20 feet, requiring permits to own legally. Experts warn that releasing exotic pets into the wild threatens local wildlife and jeopardizes the animal's survival.
