77-year-old postal worker arrested for hoarding cats she collected along her route

Sheriff John Budensiek said animal control seized the animals to save them after authorities found more than 70 caged cats and dogs in the home.

  • On Monday, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek arrested 77-year-old postal worker Gail Giustino after discovering more than 70 caged cats inside her home. Officials executed a search warrant and encountered "extreme heat" and an "intense stench" within the unventilated residence.
  • Investigators believe Giustino collected feral cats while working her postal route, mirroring past behavior. Ten years ago, code enforcement issued up to 65 citations for improper animal care and ventilation, though she eventually mitigated those problems.
  • Sheriff Budensiek described the home as an "animal jail" where some areas contained a foot of animal feces and lacked air conditioning. He stated that Giustino thinks "she's doing the right thing, but she's doing it the wrong way."
  • Authorities arrested Giustino on two misdemeanor charges to seize the animals and "save them from death." The Humane Society will initially house the cats while investigators identify other facilities where Giustino may have surrendered animals.
  • Officials intend to prevent Giustino from repossessing animals through criminal proceedings and mental health court evaluation. Sheriff Budensiek emphasized the goal is for her to "not get animals back, or she can only have one or two.
