70 South African white rhinos to be relocated to Rwanda
- Later this month, Akagera National Park in Rwanda will welcome a historic transfer of 70 white rhinos brought in from South Africa, marking the largest relocation of its kind in the nation’s history.
- This transfer follows historical declines caused by European settler hunting and a poaching epidemic that nearly wiped out white rhinos across sub-Saharan Africa.
- The rhinos will travel about 3,400 kilometers to Akagera, where Rwanda is expanding its rhino population after receiving 30 rhinos in 2021 and aims to build a new breeding stronghold.
- With about 17,000 southern white rhinos remaining and poaching rising four percent in Africa during 2023, the park called this transfer a key milestone showcasing efforts to protect and manage Akagera sustainably.
- The transfer supports growing southern white rhino populations in South Africa and positions Rwanda as a top safari destination while scientists pursue an unprecedented breeding program to save the nearly vanished northern white rhino subspecies.
