NASA is set to send astronauts around the Moon again
NASA completed repairs on a helium-flow issue and cleared Artemis II for launch, marking the first crewed lunar orbit mission in over 50 years with a 10-day flight.
- On March 12, NASA cleared Artemis II for an April launch after repairs and announced a 3 p.m. ET briefing to set a target launch date.
- A helium-flow problem prompted moving the 322-foot Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule from Launch Pad 39B to the Vehicle Assembly Building for seal repair and system refresh after a mid-February wet dress rehearsal.
- The Artemis II crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen on a 10-day mission about 4,700 miles beyond the far side in the first crewed Orion capsule flight.
- Under the agency's revised schedule, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman added Artemis III before the moon landing shifted to Artemis IV in 2028, while the NASA Office of Inspector General warned of lacking a crew rescue plan.
- With only a handful of days in early April, NASA will stream the March 12 briefing on its YouTube channel, while SpaceX and Blue Origin accelerate lander development before an April 30 stand-down.
