More evacuation orders and alerts south of Pear Lake wildfire

Authorities expanded orders for more than 100 properties as crews build containment lines and use planned ignitions to slow the 162,000-hectare blaze.

  • On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District issued expanded evacuation orders and alerts south of the Pear Lake wildfire, covering nearly 200 properties along Highway 99, Pavilion, and Marble Canyon.
  • BC Wildfire Service crews are using planned ignitions and machine guards to tie the fire into older scars, creating a tactical buffer to limit southerly movement toward Pavilion Creek and Highway 99.
  • Officials positioned four water tanks along Highway 99 to allow "easy access to water should structure protection along this corridor be necessary in the coming days." Drivers are prohibited from stopping as the highway may close suddenly.
  • The massive Pear Lake wildfire has burned more than 1,600 square kilometres, with activity strongest on western and southern boundaries now impacting properties in Pavilion and Marble Canyon.
  • Following brief morning precipitation on Sunday, warming and drying trends are forecast by Monday, Aug. 24, as BCWS crews continue monitoring hot spots while unstable weather conditions complicate containment efforts.
