5 Irish experts among 421 who won €705m in ERC Starting Grants

The grants will fund projects in viral RNA detection, meniscus repair and groundwater studies, with Irish institutions securing five awards worth nearly €4 million.

  • The European Research Council allocated €705m to 421 early-career researchers across 50 countries in its latest Starting Grants round, with only 8.8% of the 4,807 submitted proposals receiving funding.
  • European commissioner for start-ups, research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva said the EU's Choose Europe initiative is attracting scientific talent, with 20 US-based researchers moving to Europe to continue their work.
  • Researchers from University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin won multiple grants, including Dr. Alan Seltzer, who received nearly €2.5m to study groundwater gases as 'chemical fingerprints' to understand environmental change.
  • Dr. Casey Platnich of Trinity will lead the Snaprr project to detect RNA viruses, while Dr. Gabriela Kronemberger is developing Smart-Meniscus, a 3D bioprinting approach for meniscus repair.
  • These five-year Starting Grants, worth up to €1.5m each, provide recipients independence to build new teams and push scientific boundaries, according to ERC president Prof Maria Leptin.
