How Many US Adults Have Connections to Catholicism? What New Survey Finds
- Between February 3 and 9, 2025, Pew Research Center surveyed a nationally representative group of over nine thousand American adults, among whom nearly eighteen hundred identified as Catholic, to examine their ties to Catholicism.
- The survey followed ongoing trends of declining participation and asked about religious practices, cultural identity, reasons for conversion, and disaffiliation.
- Results show 20% of U.S. adults identify as Catholic, 9% as cultural Catholics, and 9% as former Catholics, with half of Catholics praying daily and 28% attending Mass weekly.
- Notably, 49% of converts said marriage or a Catholic spouse motivated their conversion, while 18% of former Catholics said their beliefs no longer align with church values.
- The survey also found Hispanic Catholics now represent 40% of Catholic adults, participate more in devotional practices, and many Catholics hold favorable views of their parish priests despite abuse concerns.
