Male Age over 45 Linked to Higher Miscarriage Risk in IVF with Donor Eggs
- An international study revealed on June 30, 2025, that IVF treatments involving male partners older than 45 show increased miscarriage rates and reduced live birth chances, even when using donor eggs from young women.
- Researchers conducted a retrospective study of 1,712 initial oocyte donation IVF cycles carried out from 2019 to 2023 across multiple centers in Italy and Spain to examine how paternal age influences reproductive outcomes.
- The study showed miscarriage rates increased from 16.3% in men 45 or younger to 23.8% in men over 45, while live birth rates dropped from 41% to 35.1% respectively.
- Lead author Dr. Maria Cristina Guglielmo noted that age-associated changes in sperm, including genetic mutations, chromosomal irregularities, and epigenetic modifications, can undermine embryo viability and increase the likelihood of pregnancy loss.
- The findings suggest fertility clinics should recognize paternal age as a significant independent factor in IVF success and counsel couples accordingly, even when using young donor eggs.
