4-year-old boy pulled from house fire after neighbor digs through wreckage with bare hands
The child was placed on oxygen and a stretcher after neighbors and deputies pulled him from the debris, officials said.
Neighbor Kennard Hodge rescued a 4-year-old boy from a burning home on Utica Street in Mississippi, an effort captured in Hinds County Sheriff body camera footage and reported by 16 WAPT News.
Six children were inside the home when the fire started around 10 p.m. Wednesday; five escaped, but the 4-year-old remained trapped until Hodge intervened with bare hands to pull him from debris.
After Hodge pulled the boy from the debris, deputies immediately began CPR as neighbors and first responders cheered, urging the child to survive with encouragement captured in body camera footage.
The 4-year-old remained in very critical condition as of Friday following the rescue operation, with Police Chief Terrence Crump describing the effort as extraordinary.
Edwards plans a community tribute at the Edwards Community Center on October 17 at 7 p.m. to honor rescuers, while investigators question a man regarding the fire's cause.
