US to leave UN cultural agency Unesco again, diplomats say
UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – The U.S. cites UNESCO's anti-Israel bias, pro-Palestinian and pro-China tilt, and divisive social agendas as reasons for withdrawal, which accounts for 8% of UNESCO's budget, officials said.
- On July 22, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the US will withdraw from UNESCO, marking the second time this decision has been made.
- A 90-day review initiated in early 2025 revealed concerns over UNESCO’s anti-Israel bias, prompting the U.S. withdrawal announcement.
- According to Anna Kelly, White House deputy spokesperson, UNESCO, headquartered in Paris, receives 8% of its funding from the US and supports woke, divisive social and cultural causes.
- UNESCO Director-General Azoulay said, `deeply regrets the U.S. decision`, but assured the agency is prepared, noting remaining membership and December 31, 2026, as the effective exit date.
- The decision marks a broader shift in US engagement with international bodies, with UNESCO continuing missions despite reduced resources, and private contributions doubling, according to Azoulay.
