Update: Sept. 29 – 3.5 Magnitude Earthquake Reported Near Piru in Ventura County
Light to moderate shaking was reported across Ventura and Los Angeles counties, and USGS said the quake registered weak to light on the Mercalli scale.
A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Piru, California, on Tuesday at 8 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey. The tremor occurred approximately 37.9 miles northwest of Los Angeles at a depth of 6.6 miles.
Residents throughout Ventura County and Los Angeles County reported feeling the shaking, with the USGS collecting 166 online responses indicating weak tremors. The temblor ranked weak to light on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, with no immediate reports of damage.
The epicenter was located about 2 miles southeast of Piru, with shaking felt across surrounding communities. Reports came from Simi Valley, Moorpark, Fillmore, Palmdale, Santa Barbara, and Inglewood.
Seismologists initially reported the Piru earthquake as a 3.5 event before upgrading the magnitude to 3.8. This follows a magnitude 3.6 quake that jolted the area near Hermosa Beach on Sep. 27.
