Brits Warned About Increase in Travel Scams Offering 'Fake' Holidays - How to Avoid
Opinium found 34% of travellers noticed more scam attempts online, while experts urged holidaymakers to check protections and avoid bank transfers.
A recent Opinium survey found that 34% of travelers noticed an increase in potential scams on social media platforms over the past year. Holidaymakers face rising warnings about online fraud targeting vacation bookings.
George Ralchev, head of risk at emerchantpay, said, "Holidaymakers are being targeted by social media scammers looking to take advantage of the peak travel season." Scammers often use stolen photos and request bank transfer payments.
Consumer caution is rising, with 70% of people now wary of promotional holiday emails due to fraud fears. Fifty percent prefer using travel businesses that clearly explain their consumer protection measures.
Lisa Webb, consumer law expert at Which?, suggests using reverse image searches or online map checks to spot fake listings. She warns against paying by bank transfer for social media advertisements.
Travelers should verify if companies are members of ABTA or offer ATOL financial protection before booking. If scammed, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to Report Fraud.
