3 Steps to Support Mental Health for Rural Youth
The program offers free, anonymous single-session interventions and 24/7 crisis support as rural youth face a suicide rate 74% higher than urban peers.
- On Monday, nonprofit Rural Minds launched the national version of its Rural Youth Mental Wellness Program, sponsored by the Sompo Foundation to provide accessible mental health resources to rural youth.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates for rural youth ages 15-19 are 74% higher than urban counterparts, driven by scarce providers, limited insurance coverage, and stigma.
- The program offers anonymous Single-Session Interventions through Project YES, a digital resource developed with Northwestern University's Lab for Scalable Mental Health, with each SSI typically taking 5-10 minutes.
- "A young person's ZIP code should never determine whether they can access meaningful mental health support," said Jessica L. Schleider, director of Northwestern's lab, praising the evidence-based tools.
- The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential 24/7 support for youth in crisis, while additional program details are available at RuralMinds.org.
