3 Michigan school districts investigated for sexual orientation, gender ideology studies
- On Feb. 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division launched investigations into Detroit Public Schools Community District, Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, and Lansing School District and sought to join a lawsuit against Los Angeles Unified School District.
- The Civil Rights Division said it will review whether sexual orientation and gender ideology content appeared in grades pre-K–12 and assess compliance with Mahmoud v. Taylor, 606 U.S. 522 .
- DOJ letters sent Wednesday noted investigators will assess whether districts limit access to single-sex intimate spaces, including bathrooms and locker rooms, by biological sex.
- The DOJ filing notes that roughly 90% of LAUSD schools are classified PHBAO, which receive extra staffing lowering the student-teacher ratio by roughly 5.5 students, and if allowed to intervene, the U.S. Department of Justice could pursue relief barring race-based funding or admissions.
- Officials stressed that investigators have not reached conclusions and ongoing investigations with no conclusions reached remain active, while Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said the department is focused on enforcing parents and parental‑notification/opt‑out rights and broader civil‑rights priorities.
